Almost One-Third of Consumers are Extending PaymentsResults from a survey taken by the Cambridge Consumer Credit Index indicate that consumers are still burdened by debt. Consumers were asked, "Thinking about the credit card purchases you made last month, when you received the bills this month, did you pay off the balance in full or are you extending payments past this month?"

Results from a survey taken by the Cambridge Consumer Credit Index indicate that consumers are still burdened by debt. Consumers were asked, "Thinking about the credit card purchases you made last month, when you received the bills this month, did you pay off the balance in full or are you extending payments past this month?"

Responses were:
Pay off balance in full: 43 percent.
Extend payments: 31 percent.
Did not use credit cards: 26 percent.
Don't know/refused: 1 percent.

For those who extended payments:
Paid off more than half the balance: 17 percent.
Paid less than half the balance, but more than the minimum: 37 percent.
Paid the minimum payment due: 40 percent.
Made no payment: 6 percent.

Which of the following statements best describes why you are taking on debt?
Taking on debt because I'm confident in my ability to pay it when the bill arrives: 56 percent. Taking on debt because I do not have the money to pay for these expenses and I need to finance them over a period of time: 44 percent. Clearly many Americans are feeling tremendously burdened by their debts, with 46 percent of those with balances paying just the minimum or making no payment at all. Forty-four percent of Americans are taking on debt knowing they don't have the money to pay off their bills when they arrive, demonstrating that they feel they have no alternative but to take on more debt to cover the cost of basic necessities.
